Our work with parliamentarians

Help for helping your constituents cover

We work closely with parliamentarians and assembly members to address the issues that affect our clients and the Citizens Advice service more generally.

We prepare briefings for debates in the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Senedd.

At a local level, Citizens Advice Bureaux help MPs and assembly members to understand the problems that their constituents are facing, and find practical solutions for individual cases.

Briefings

Our briefings are based on analysis of client evidence. They help MPs, peers and assembly members to understand how proposed legislation may impact on our clients –  and their constituents – and allow them to adopt an informed position in parliamentary debates.

Other ways we work with parliamentarians and assembly members

All party parliamentary groups

We organise two All party parliamentary groups (APPGs): one on Citizens Advice and one on Debt and personal finance. These give us another forum for raising issues of concern with interested parliamentarians.

Parliamentarian of the year

Yvonne Fovargue MP

At an annual reception held in the Houses of Parliament we announce our Parliamentarian of the year. The award acknowledges a peer or MP we have worked closely with to deliver real change on an issue affecting our clients. In 2011 we recognised Yvonne Fovargue for her determination and success in keeping the issues which impact on the Citizens Advice service and our clients high on the political agenda.

Our wider policy work

When a client contacts a Citizens Advice Bureau, their problem is often a symptom of having been let down by existing policy, legislation or practices. We try to ensure that the problems experienced by today’s clients are not experienced unnecessarily by others down the line. Essentially we help policy makers to learn from their mistakes, and working with parliamentarians is just one of the ways we do this.
